we’ve been seeing more and more armadillos on the side of the road(both alive and as roadkill) lately here. what’s making them migrate down here?

armadillos are migrating as where they are now is suffering a economic downturn. Jobs are scarce for the armadillo as businesses are falling under in the depression. 4000 armadillos have had their house reposessed this year alone as banks are calling in their loans. The average armadillo does no longer earn enough money to look after their families and so are looking for pastures new where there is more prosperity and jobs are plentiful. I just thought this would be a better answer than I dont know and I’d rather put the effort in for my 2 points.

They are not migrating, they are expanding their territory. As their population increases their range expands. Check out this site: http://www.msu.edu/~nixonjos/armadillo/expansion.html

Alabama has been a home for armadillos for thousands of years. They are nocturnal, solitary and secretive and so can be difficult to observe regularly. Lately, armadillos have become more common than they were largely due to a reduction of predators and a prevalence of food in the form of worms and grubs as lawns become more common. Many armadillos will also eat garbage and rummage in compost heaps. Higher population densities mean you see them more often than you used to.

starting? more likely you’re just starting to see and notice more of them. They’ve been there. I only ever saw a few…..but over in Mississippi, you see them all walking around munching on stuff in the middle of the day.
