    It depends on whether he was really “chicken” or just feartful of society in general. He might have had other issues that could require therapy. Then perhaps “cross” was too strong a word. It implies anger and perhaps he was upset or angry at his parents or other authority figures. The “road’ might represent the place of decision that impeded his thoughts or blocked his path to enlightenment. The term “why” could indicate the questioning his very existance. In any case, he should take two aspirins and call me in the morning.
